Mr. Brian Sledge

The Teacher of Graphic Design

Brian Sledge began developing his comic book and graphic novel technique in 2017 after graduating with a Marketing Degree from Berkeley College. He began his teaching career in 2019!

The Story Begins

In September of 2019, Brian began working as a Certified Substitute Teacher at Brooklake Elementary School in Florham Park, NJ. Almost immediately, he began integrating his graphic design skills into his workday. A fellow teacher asked if he could develop a creative way to help improve student attention and interest in narrative writing, Brian created a graphic novel that described the narrative writing process!

Towards the end of the 2021 school year, Brian was asked by an ELA instructor to teach her two 4th-grade classes some graphic design techniques that will assist the students with their narrative story & graphic novel writing assignment. Brian spent the next 4-weeks visiting the classes daily for graphic design & layout instructions!

Mr. Sledge and the ELA teacher initiated a summer graphic design contest: to create a graphic novel that has an original story and uses characters they know. During the Summer, seven students collaborated and created 3 graphic novels!
